You will see letters after provider names. They show training and testing, not how well someone will fit your child. Here are the common ones.
- BCBA
- Board Certified Behavior Analyst. A graduate-level certification in behavior analysis. BCBAs can practice independently and supervise technicians who deliver ABA.1
- RBT
- Registered Behavior Technician. Works directly with your child under a BCBA's supervision.1
- CCC-SLP
- Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology, from ASHA. A speech-language pathologist with this credential holds a master's or doctoral degree and has met ASHA's certification standards.2
- OTR/L
- Occupational Therapist, Registered (national certification from NBCOT) and Licensed (by the state). OTs help with daily skills, play, sensory needs and fine motor skills.3
Check, do not guess
- The BACB, ASHA and NBCOT each offer a way to confirm a certification on their websites.
- State licensing boards list licensed providers. Ask the provider which license they hold.
- It is normal to ask, and a good provider will not mind.
A credential is a starting point
Also ask about experience with children like yours, the approach they use, and how they work with families.
1. Behavior Analyst Certification Board, BCBA certification.
2. ASHA, SLP certification standards.
3. NBCOT, What is an OTR or COTA.
